obert, the fifth child of Timothy Tay and Penny Rumble was born in Victoria on 14 July 1968. He was born a retarded child, but this was not immediately evident. When he was fourteen months old, the army posted his family to Singapore for three years. There, army clinics tested Robert  but the results were unsatisfactory.

When he was four and a half years old, his family returned to Sydney and he was carefully checked. Investigation showed the problem to be epilepsy and retardation. He did not have grand-mal epilepsies until he reached puberty. For a long time his parents, Tim and Penny, looked after him at home but in 1980 they found a very good private place that would care for him properly. Penny started doing day-care work to help pay for his upkeep.

                                                    g

EARLY SCHOOL

EDUCATION

At the age of four, John attended a kindergarten in Hensman Road, Shenton Park. The following year he began school at St.Aloysius's Catholic School, also in Shenton Park. In late 1960 his parents moved to Mt.Claremont and, in 1961, John attended St.Thomas's Catholic School in Claremont. In 1964 he changed to St.Louis College, Claremont, where he completed his secondary education.

WORK:

Shire of Gnowangerup

In 1972 John enrolled in the University of Western Australia to study commerce but, after two terms, decided that this was not for him. He withdrew from his course, went to  the country and for a few months worked as a labourer for the Shire of Gnowangerup, where his uncle, Edward Chown, was Shire Clerk. Soon, he found a permanent position in the Shire Office in Tambellup, only 40 km from Gnowangerup. It was while he was in this job that he married Pat Varey of Gnowangerup in 1975.

Wagin: Assistant Shire Clerk

The move to the country was good for John. He enjoyed country life and got on well with country people. He began studying Local Government accounting and other subjects. He moved to a better position in the Shire Office at Kulin and, later again, to the Wagin Shire, where he became Assistant Shire Clerk.  While there, he completed his Local Government studies and qualified as a Shire Clerk.

John buys the Wagin Foodland Supermarket

John looked for a more challenging occupation and, when the opportunity arose, he and Pat went into partnership with another Wagin couple to buy and operate the local Foodland Supermarket.

Sporting and Social Interests

In Wagin, John was active in the town's sporting and social life. As well as playing football, cricket, golf and tennis, he also found time to coach junior football.  During a term as secretary of one of the local football clubs he wrote, produced and performed in numerous concert-cabaret nights to raise money for the local community. He was a member of the local Rotary Club.

Move to the Wongan Hills Supermarket

Expanding his business interests

Approximately eighteen months after becoming a partner in the Wagin supermarket, having learnt the fundamentals, John looked around for a larger one. He sold his fifty-per-cent share in the Wagin Supermarket and he and his family moved to Wongan Hills, where he bought and operated the town's only supermarket, which proved quite profitable.

He was quick to see opportunities and was willing to take risks. He developed part of his store into a coffee and fast-food shop. He then purchased three existing shops in Wongan, which were already tenanted, and built three new ones. This brought new business to the town. Next, he bought the supermarket at Ballidu - about 40 km from Wongan - upgraded it and, with the help of a manageress, ran it in conjunction with his Wongan Hills supermarket.

John took a short course to obtain a real-estate representative's licence and operated in the Wongan Hills area representing a Perth company. He also financed  W.A. Pelt Processing Pty Ltd, a fellmongering plant at Wongan Hills, employing a manager, who was expert in this field, and a number of local people.

In his spare time he continued coaching football teams and belonged to the local Rotary Club, organising dinner-and-cabaret nights to assist charitable causes. He was popular in the district, and well-liked by his staff.

1990: Move to Perth

At the end of 1990, because of his children's educational needs, John and his family moved to Perth, where he bought the Bi-Lo supermarket at Midland. The family resided in Woodvale, where his two boys attended the local high-school.

            g

Early life

In later years St.Louis College merged with Loreto Girls School to form John XXIII College

Peter has only very vague recollections of his first few years of life at 156 Nicholson Road, Subiaco. When the family moved to 3 Beecham Road, Mount Claremont, he attended St.Thomas' Catholic Primary School in Claremont for three years and then commenced in 1966 at St. Louis College, which was then located on Stirling Highway, Claremont.

BOYHOOD

1This bushland is now the opulent residential suburb of St.John's Wood.

SCHOOL

The Mt.Claremont environment offered a wide choice of "adventure" playgrounds for Peter. These included Lake Claremont, an old car dump upon which Lake Claremont golf course was later developed, Claremont Football Club, the Showgrounds and the then large tract of undeveloped bushland1, which separated Beecham Road from the Graylands Mental Asylum.

Academically, Peter achieved high standards at St.Louis, winning several prizes at primary school for spelling, arithmetic and aggregate marks. He also developed an unbridled enthusiasm for Australian Rules football and cricket at an early age.

In 1967 the family moved to Wembley Downs. This opened up new playgrounds in the form of City Beach and large areas of virgin coastal bushland, which separated the home at 98 Brompton Road from West Coast Highway.

Peter continued to do well in secondary school, achieving high marks in his Junior Certificate in 1972, and Leaving and Matriculation examinations in 1974.  In his early teens he developed a rebellious attitude to the strict disciplinarian approach of the Jesuits at St.Louis. This resulted ultimately in his expulsion - and subsequent reinstatement - in 1972.

SPORTING INTERESTS

In sport, he achieved high levels, representing the school in First XVIII football, playing at centre half forward. He also played First XI cricket as an opening batsman. After leaving school, Peter went on to play football for the University of Western Australia in various divisions of the W.A. Amateur Football Association. He was a founding member of the Old Louisian's Cricket Club, which began in 1974 and which eventually won its way to the First Grade division of the Western Australian Suburban Turf Cricket Association. Peter also continued his love of the beach and spent much of his spare time surfing with friends on local beaches.

UNIVERSITY:

LAW STUDIES

At University, Peter undertook a year in the Arts faculty as a pre-requisite to commencing a Law degree. He enjoyed University life enormously, foregoing an invitation to undertake Honours because of a preference for his active social life. In 1978 he completed a Bachelor or Jurisprudence, and a Bachelor of Laws in 1979. He then had the enormous pleasure of graduating on the same night as his mother when she was awarded her Bachelor of Arts.

Holiday in the

United Kingdom

Immediately upon completing his studies, Peter travelled with friends on holiday to the United Kingdom and from there ventured off on his own for a six-week "backpack" tour of Europe, which enabled him to try out his schoolboy French and to have his first attempt at skiing while visiting the Pyrenes in Andora.

MARRIAGE

to

ANNE BOYLE

While in the UK, Peter met his future wife, Anne Boyle, who was then working as a nurse in Coventry and sharing a house with two of Peter's friends who were there on a working holiday. Following his return to Perth, Peter kept in touch with Anne through a constant stream of letters which finally enticed her to come to Perth in mid-1980. They married in July 1981, a few weeks before

her visa expired. Anne's sister, Mary, flew from England to attend the wedding.

Peter and Anne's first home was a rented house at 12 Townshend Road, Subiaco - conveniently located near the main gate of Subiaco oval - convenient, as Peter's love of football continued. Shortly after their marriage, they purchased a humble weatherboard cottage at 8 Muriel Place, Leederville, in rather dubious socio-economic surroundings.

EMPLOYMENT

Children

By this stage, Peter had commenced employment as an articled clerk with law-firm, Jackson McDonald, and Anne was nursing at St.John of God hospital, Subiaco. Later, Anne joined the Silver Chain Nursing Association and, while working in her district, spotted the house at 11 Barrett Street, Wembley, which became their home from 1983 to 1989, during which time their three children were born.

Before the arrival of the children, Anne and Peter took the opportunity to travel overseas, first to Bali in 1982 and then to England and Ireland in 1983, when Peter first met Anne's parents and other members of her family.

Joining

Robinson Cox

* The R & I Bank changed its name to BankWest in 1994.

In 1985 Peter decided to leave Jackson McDonald to join the firm of Robinson Cox. In July 1986 he became a partner of Robinson Cox, specialising in business and property law. In January 1992 Robinson Cox merged with the Sydney based firm, Clayton Utz, to form one of Australia's largest national law firms. Peter's office is located on the 40th floor of the R & I Bank Tower* in St.George's Terrace, Perth.

Illness:

Heart Surgery

Peter's legal career was interrupted in 1990 by a life-threatening occurrence. He had to undergo open-heart surgery to replace a leaking aortic valve and a section of his dilated aorta. The defect in the valve and aorta had been detected several years before but the actual decision to operate caused enormous stress and fear for both Peter and Anne. They were fortunate to have added support from Anne's sister, Mary, who was visiting them from England at the time and extended her stay to help care for Peter and Anne's three young children (as well as her own two, who had come with her) who were too young to understand the trauma which their parents were suffering in dealing with the prospect of Peter's major surgery.

Securities Institute of Australia:

President of the Western Australian Division

Peter also undertook a graduate diploma with the Securities Institute of Australia, which he obtained in 1989 following which he joined the Western Australian divisional council of that Institute. In 1993 he was appointed President of the Western Australian division, the first lawyer to hold that position, traditionally occupied by stockbrokers.

Interests and Activities

Peter, Anne and their children currently reside at 40 Rockton Road, Nedlands and have done so since 1989. Despite the demands of their children, they still manage the odd holiday away together, including skiing trips to New Zealand in 1991 and Falls Creek Victoria in 1993. However, generally, family holidays are limited to such places as Rottnest and Dunsborough.

Peter is still keen on his sport, being an avid fan of the West Coast Eagles and he actively participates in tennis, swimming and cycling. He has also undertaken a few "mini" marathons. Anne is now a part-time student at Murdoch University and enjoys running, judo, and working-out at the gymnasium. They have in common a passion for hot and spicy foods from South-East Asia.

It was while Louise was at the Holy Spirit Convent School that she learnt to play the guitar.  Sometimes she accompanied the school choir at folk-masses. At Newman College, in year-ten, she obtained a singing part in the school's production of Godspell, which was a most professional production.

It was in 1978, when she was fifteen, that her parents took her on a holiday to Europe. Louise found this a wonderful experience and enjoyed practising French conversation. In the following year she completed her Leaving Certificate and in 1980 began studies at the Churchlands campus of the West Australian College of Advanced Education1 for a Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood Education, which she completed in 1982.

raeme, the son of James Carroll and Lesley Rumble, was born on 20 February 1952 at Subiaco, Western Australia. At school he became very interested in, and excelled in Australian Rules football. He played full forward. He also became a good high jumper and considered training for the Olympics. He gave up this idea when he discovered that the high jump coach would not permit him to continue with his football because of the possibility of injury.

Graeme was always very interested in science, winning a scholarship from Kent Street School to go to a science convention in Sydney. He became engrossed in astronomy, but realised that a career in that area would inevitably lead him to take a position overseas. At the age of seventeen he decided that medicine was possibly his best choice. When schooling finished he had to decide whether to continue with his sport, or take medicine at the University. He chose medicine. Study came easily to Graeme, and he graduated without difficulty.

On 22 May 1973 Graeme married Janet Murdoch at St.Peter's Church, Victoria Park, WA. They now1 live in Darlington, Western Australia, and have six children: Leon, Gillian, Erin, Frances, Patrick and Bronwyn.

In 1983 Graeme and Janet, with their then three children, went to England for three years. Their fourth child, Frances, was born there.  Graeme undertook research into rheumatoid arthritis at the Strangeways Laboratories at Cambridge. Returning to Perth, he continued his work on rheumatoid arthritis and is now1 employed for part of his time at the Shenton Park rehabilitation centre. He spends two days a week on research work at the Royal Perth Hospital. He is also building up a specialised practice one week-day and on Saturdays, at Mt.Lawley. Sunday is his only free day.

tephen, the second child of James Carroll and Lesley Rumble, was born on 10 October 1954 at Subiaco, Western Australia. On 27 April 1986 he married Valma Arvidson at Christchurch, Claremont. They have1 a son Peter, and twins Laura and Michael.

At school Stephen, like his older brother, Graeme, became very interested in sport, particularly Australian Rules football, at which he excelled. He played this for several years but unfortunately sustained a cartilage and knee injury. This curtailed his activities. He gave up football but continued to play sport on a social basis. He joined a Squash club and, in 1990, was playing squash on a competitive level. As a boy he was not study oriented. He would rather kick a football. He took his Leaving certificate, failed English, but passed it the following year by going to night-school. He then joined the Commonwealth Public Service, rising up through the grades to a good position, which he now2 holds.

Throughout her school years, Janine was very studious and indulged in sport - such as netball and horse-riding - only for recreation. In early adult life she played squash and enjoyed swimming. During her teenage years, when her mother was unwell, she formed a very close relationship with her father.

In 1976 she gained her School Leaving Certificate with very high marks. Although at one time she considered studying medicine like her brother Graeme, she enrolled at the University of Western Australia for a science degree, majoring in mathematics. During the course she developed an interest in Computer Science and, in 1979, she completed a Bachelor's degree with a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science.

After graduation she entered a world-wide company that has now1 become UNISYS. After working for three years in Perth the Company transferred her to their head-office in Sydney. She holds1 an international support position that has led her to travel to such countries as U.S.A, U.K., Sweden, and South East Asia.

Janine met Martin Fitzpatrick in Sydney. They live2 at 117 Fiddens Wharf Road, Killara, N.S.W. Their first child was born on 25 November 1990. Janine expected their second child to be born in April 1994. Unfortunately, Amanda Lesley was stillborn on 31 December 1993.

They married on 9 May 1981 at San Diego, California, USA. After graduation he and Sharon worked at the Sunland Home, a Christian Science facility in San Diego.  Later he rejoined the Navy, and the family moved to the Naval base in Florida. At one time he spent five months at sea. After his stint in the navy he returned to work as a Christian Science nurse, eventually moving to "Hilltops" at Lake Bluff, Illinios, about fifty miles south of Chicago.  John finally left nursing and is now1 with a law firm, but is still in the Naval Reserve.  He and Sharon have three children: Natalie Joy, Monica Lee and Lucia Nicole.

Sharon's mother & grandmother always hoped she would become a Christian Science nurse.

haron Alison, the first child of John Baseden and Alison Rumble, was born at Subiaco, Western Australia, on 3 June 1959. Her mother said that she was a good, obedient and caring girl. From the age of eight, her mother, Alison, and her grandmother, Muriel, hoped that one day she might become a Christian Science nurse, as she helped her mother so beautifully. For the delivery of both Lesley and Ailsa,  Muriel had a Christian Science nurse. As a teenager, Sharon's Sunday school teacher was a Christian Science nurse, and was an influence on her.

After leaving school she stayed helping her mother until at 21 she went to USA to train as a Christian Science nurse.

When Sharon left school she first worked in an office.  In 1977 her father left home and she spent three years helping her mother before setting out at the age of twenty-one to become a graduate Christian Science nurse. The three-year training course could be undertaken either in England, or in America. Sharon went to San Francisco.

She married her classmate John Rooker in 1981.

During her course she became engaged to a classmate, John Rooker, whose home was in San Diego. They married in San Diego on 9 May 1981, and both her parents attended, while her sister Michelle was Maid of Honour.

Her daughter Natalie was born in 1982.

Alison and Michelle went to USA to look after the baby.

Her first child, Natalie, was born in 1982. When Natalie was eight months old, Sharon and John went to San Francisco for two months to undertake further Christian Science training.  Alison and Michelle returned to America to look after the baby. Sharon and John then continued with their work at Sunland Home, San Diego, which was a Christian Science facility.

Husband John rejoined the Navy and went to Florida.

She twice visited her mother in Australia, but now lives

in Illinios.

Michelle returned to Australia, but Alison stayed in America for eleven months.  Sharon's second child, Monica, was born in 1983, and Lucia Nicole was born in 1988.  When John rejoined the Navy, the family moved to Florida and Sharon no longer worked in a Christian Science facility.  In 1985 John went to sea for five months, so Sharon visited her mother in Australia, returning to America in February 1986. She and her husband then went to live in Illinios.  Sharon paid another visit to her mother at the end of 1990.

Michelle as a young girl wanted endless company.

ichelle Lee, the second child of John Baseden and Alison Rumble, was born at Subiaco Western Australia, on 12 March 1963.  She was very active as a young girl and her mother, Alison, found her more difficult to manage than her older sister Sharon.  Michelle and her sister were very different as children. Sharon could organise herself and be happy with her own company. Michelle wanted endless company, and did not like being by herself.

She was high spirited, not inclined to study at school.

As a young girl she was very spirited. Before starting school, her mother was concerned that she would be unruly, and spoke to her teacher about this. The teacher replied, `It would be terrible to break that lovely high spirit.' Fortunately Michelle got on well with the teacher, but she was not inclined to study.

At age 17 she blossomed and was a great help to her mother.

When she was seventeen her sister went to America. Michelle took over the task of assisting her mother. Alison said that she then blossomed, became very helpful, and showed a strong sense of responsibility. Michelle and her boy-friend often took Alison on outings.

She went to America for the wedding of her sister Sharon.

She took some training in day-care work.

Michelle visited America several times. She was Maid of Honour at Sharon's wedding in May 1981.  On her return to Australia she became interested in day-care work with small children and, in 1982, at the age of nineteen, did some training for this.  From a young age Michelle, like her mother, had always been fascinated by small children.

She returned to USA in 1983 and worked in Texas as a nanny for a few months.

In 1983 she returned to America with her mother, and enjoyed caring for Sharon's baby, Natalie. Officially she was not allowed to work in America but she applied for a nanny's position in Texas that was advertised in the Christian Science Monitor. She liked Texas where she looked after two school-aged children and a baby, but she had difficulty controlling the twelve year old boy. After five months she gave up this job and returned to Australia.

Back in Australia she worked as a class-mother at a New Norcia school.

Returning to her sister in Florida, she met Navy boy Jeff Kueser. They were married in Perth in 1987.

She now lives in Perth and runs a 30-child, day-care centre.

Michelle became a senior aide at several day-care centres and, in 1984 when she was twenty-one, became a class-mother at a school in New Norcia, Western Australia for about eighteen months.  She then visited her sister Sharon for a holiday. At this time Sharon and John were at the United States Naval base in Florida. There, Michelle met, and became engaged to a Navy boy, Jeff Kueser. She and Jeff came to Perth, Western Australia and were married in King's Park on 20 September 1987. They returned to America and had a son, Leland John, in October 1988, but in May 1989 settled back in the suburb of Karrinyup, Perth, in a house owned by Michelle's father, John.

On the first of November, 1991 they had a daughter, Courtney Alison, followed by a son, Brandon James on 7 November 1993.

In 1992 Michelle ran a family home day-care unit but had plans to enlarge it.  She and Jeff converted their house in Huntriss Road, Karrinyup to a thirty-child, long day-care centre, and bought another house at 12 Leander Street, Beldon for their home, moving there in 1993. Jeff worked in the day-care centre in 1993 during Michelle's pregnancy.

eirdre, the first child of Edward Chown and Dawn Mayberry, was born at Mt. Barker on 13 July 1965 while her father was Shire Clerk at Cranbrook, Western Australia. She went to Kindergarten in Cranbrook, to primary school in  Gnowangerup and completed her secondary education at Esperance. When in primary school she enjoyed singing, and Dawn's father gave her his violin. Like her younger sisters she showed musical talent. She became a good performer, singing a solo item before a big audience at a school concert at Gnowangerup. Later at school she played basketball, and developed good organising ability.

Deirdre wanted to train as a teacher but, with five growing daughters, her parents were not in a position to support her in Perth, away from home. So, after leaving school, she first worked for a catering firm and then for a bank.

At eighteen her father helped her buy an old Volkswagon Bug. She was delighted with this, but drove to the Cape Le Grande National Park where she ran out of oil and ruined the engine.

With a girl-friend, Deirdre decided to leave home and see something of Australia. She settled in Cairns in Queensland, worked for the Commonwealth Department of Social Security and met James McDermid. She and James married on 14 December 1985 when she was twenty years of age. But the relationship proved unsuccessful and, after two years, she and James separated.

Deirdre returned to Western Australia, obtaining a transfer to Perth with the Department of Social Security.

She continued her interest in basketball, organising a Department of Social Security team. After working for about a year in Perth Deirdre took leave from her Department and travelled to London. She took two or three jobs of a housekeeping nature and later completed a cocktail course and worked at the London Hilton during her last six months. She spent almost fifteen months overseas before returning in December 1992 to her position with the Department of Social Security.

nnette, the second child of Edward Chown and Dawn Mayberry, was born at Mt.Barker on 22 August 1966. She has a twin sister, Gail. Although Annette and Gail were probably fraternal and not identical twins, her parents sometimes had difficulty in distinguishing them, both in appearance and in personality.

Growing up in primary school at Gnowangerup Annette and Gail did everything together, tended to sit next to each other, and almost led a single life. The teachers discussed this with Ted and Dawn and they decided that both would benefit by being separated. So, although they were in the same grade at school, they were placed in separate class rooms. This was initially traumatic for them, but it was a good decision. However, it was not until late high school in Esperance that they started to develop different talents.

Both girls showed an interest in music and Annette became very proficient in electric guitar in Country and Western Music style.

At the age of twelve Annette excelled herself by performing well in an annual race, The King of the Mountain, to the top of a local hill, known as Wireless Hill. Ted recalled the event:

The race started in the business area of the town, went along the Esplanade and finished at the peak of the hill with the Rotary lookout. Good athletes came to Esperance to participate, including State champions. Annette nearly caused a big coup when she streaked out up the mountain near the end of the race. She was given a trophy for coming first in the under sixteen category, but she came second of all the women. The King of the Mountain  was a race in which everyone took part - almost from people in wheel chairs, to State Athletes.

From about the age of eight or nine up to the time they left Esperance at the age of seventeen, both Annette and Gail worked on the weekends in the Esperance Shell Shop. This helped build their confidence and self-esteem. The Shell Shop, owned by Mr and Mrs Vaughan, was unique. Situated in the original railway station, now in Museum Park, Mrs Vaughan bought and sold shells, and had an exceptional knowledge of the subject. Both Annette and Gail built up  their own splendid collections of shells.

By the time Annette left school her parents had moved to Perth. She enrolled in Environmental Science at the Western Australian Institute of Technology1. After completing one year of this, she transferred to a nursing course. She worked hard, had much travelling to do every day, and worked part-time in a video store.

At the age of nineteen, in 1985, she decided to travel.  Travelling by bus and staying in Youth hostels, she toured up through Alice Springs to Darwin. Then she went to Cairns and was bridesmaid for her sister Deirdre at her wedding on 14 December.

Having completed her nursing degree and worked for a year, she went overseas for twelve months, travelling with Valerie Furphy2, the daughter of her father's cousin, Robin. For three months she worked in a hospital in Oxford, then travelled to France  and went grape picking for a short period. However, for most of her year overseas she lived off her savings.

After returning to Western Australia she worked in the Mount Hospital in Perth. She enjoyed working in the wards but was transferred to theatre work as assistant to an anaesthetist. This she found stressful so, at the end of 1992, she transferred to the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, where she started her midwifery training.

Annette is still3 single but leads a very busy and active social life. She has enjoyed sky-diving, hang-gliding, gliding, scuba-diving, abseiling, parachuting, water-skiing, horse-riding and bushwalking. She has also taken part in two triathlons, enjoys squash and ballroom dancing.

ail, the third child of Edward Chown and Dawn Mayberry, was born at Mt.Barker on 22 August 1966. She has a twin sister, Annette, to whom she related very closely as a young girl1. Gale started primary school at Gnowangerup and completed her secondary school at Esperance. Like other members of her family she had considerable musical talent, becoming very proficient on the flute, which she learnt at school. When a teenager, she and Annette became very interested in Country and Western music. She did well at school, one year winning the Literary Award.

By the time she finished her secondary education, the family had moved to Perth. At first she was attracted to teaching, and almost completed her teacher training course.  Her mother, Dawn, recalled Gail's final teaching practice assignment:

They placed her in a school out behind Balga. She came home one day and said, `I'm not doing any more of this. I'm not going to be spending my time, preparing interesting and challenging classes for these kids, while they are constantly being rude, vulgar, and completely inattentive.'   So that was that. She said, `I'm not wasting my time on them."   She gave up teaching and went into a bank.

The staff at the bank seemed too uncaring for her liking, and the work was not sufficiently challenging. Finally, she trained as a dental nurse at the Perth Dental Hospital. This she enjoyed. She had found her niche.

She met Euan Allott at a Perth drop-in centre for youth where his brother was a Salvation Army worker. They married on 20 December 1986 and, after a difficult pregnancy, their son, James, was born on 2 February 1989. At the end of 1991, Gail's relationship with Euan failed, and they separated.

Gail now works2 in Bunbury as a dental nurse and lives with her son in a home unit. While she is at work, she puts James into a child-care centre run by the sister of her sister Hayley's husband.

ayley, the fourth child of Edward Chown and Dawn Mayberry, was born on 10 April 1968 at Mt.Barker. Dawn's parents came to Cranbrook to look after the other three girls while she was in hospital. Hayley started primary school at Esperance where her father had become Shire Clerk. She did well at school and, like her sister Gail, gained the Literary Award in the later years of secondary school. She became a good organiser and was often protective of others, including her older sisters. Like some of her other sisters she gained work experience by working part-time for a catering company in the town.

Hayley liked music, had a good voice and became lead singer in a local band.

Her family moved to Perth so she completed her last year of secondary schooling at Scarborough Senior High School. Her mother recalled that Scarborough was a rough school and that Hayley had a somewhat bumpy ride there, but did well, and was well liked.

After completing school she enrolled at Curtin University for a nursing course and, again, like some of her sisters, worked part-time in a video store so she could pay her way through college. In her school days at Esperance she had known slightly John Tuck, who was also a student at the school. Now, at College in Perth, she was reintroduced to him. They formed a relationship and were married in Bunbury on 11 November 1989, where they settled and built a house.  Hayley works at the Bunbury District Hospital1.

aena, the fifth child of Edward Chown and Dawn Mayberry, was born on 6 September, 1969 in Mt.Barker. By the time she was ready for school her parents had moved from Cranbrook to Gnowangerup. It was not long before they moved to Esperance. The bulk of her schooling was undertaken at Esperance, but was completed at Scarborough Senior High School. Raena was the third of the girls in the family to gain the Literary Award at school.

Raena and her sisters once said that they would have nothing to do with nursing as a career, and would not follow in their mother's footsteps. But both Annette and Hayley became nurses while Gail became a dental nurse. So it was not surprising that Raena eventually followed in the same direction.

After leaving school she went into a Radiology Clinic, but working in a darkroom, mixing chemicals, eventually made her feel unwell. She stuck it out for more than a year before deciding that she should change to something less dangerous to her health. She enrolled in a nursing course and, at the end of 1992, had a further year and a half of work to complete it.

She leads an active social life and enjoys camping at Mandurah.
